What are Medjool dates? Questions and answers about one of the best-known date varieties

by sahha .cz on Aug 21, 2026
Datle Medjool jsou velké, měkké a masité plody datlové palmy Phoenix dactylifera, známé svou výrazně sladkou chutí.

Dates are among the oldest cultivated fruits of the Middle East and North Africa. Among the hundreds of known varieties, Medjool, also known as Medjoul, Mejhool, or Majhoul, stands out in particular today. It is characterized by large fruits, soft flesh, and a distinctly sweet taste.

What are dates?

Dates are the fruits of the date palm Phoenix dactylifera L. Inside the fruit is one elongated pit surrounded by flesh and skin.

Dates pass through several stages during ripening. Fully ripe fruits are referred to in Arabic as tamr. At this stage, depending on the variety, they are soft to drier, brown in color, and naturally high in sugars.

How old is the tradition of date cultivation?

Very old. The exact place of origin of the date palm is not definitively known, but the FAO cites evidence of its cultivation approximately as early as 4000 BC in southern Mesopotamia, in the territory of present-day Iraq.

Date palms gradually spread throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and the oases of the Sahara. For thousands of years, they were an important crop, especially in dry regions, where they provided food and formed an important part of local agriculture.

What are Medjool dates?

Medjool is a specific variety of date palm, not a general term for all large dates.

The FAO describes it as a variety with large, attractive, high-quality fruits. Medjool belongs among the soft dates and, when properly cultivated, can reach a very large size.

It is precisely the large fruit, soft flesh, and pronounced sweetness that have made Medjool an important commercial variety.

Medjool, Medjoul, Mejhool, or Majhoul – which is correct?

You may encounter all of these names.

The FAO lists, for example, the forms:

Medjool, Mejhool, Medjoul, Majhoul, Majul, or Medjhool.

They are different transliterations of the same name from Arabic.

What does the name Majhoul mean?

This is a very interesting aspect of this variety.

The Arabic word مجهول – majhūl means “unknown.”

For the Medjool variety, the FAO directly gives the meaning of the name as “Unknown”.

Therefore, the Czech spelling “Medjool” is not the original meaning of the word, but an internationally widespread form of the variety’s name.

Where do Medjool dates come from?

Medjool is historically associated primarily with Morocco and the Tafilalet region.

The FAO states that the variety originates from this area and that, since the 17th century, it was among the important Moroccan export dates. In 1927, Medjool was introduced to the USA. The University of California also links the origin of Medjool to Morocco’s Tafilalt region.

Today, Medjool is also grown outside Morocco and has become an internationally traded variety.

What do Medjool dates taste like?

The FAO characterizes the taste of Medjool as excellent and sweet, with the sweetness not described as unpleasantly concentrated. The fruits have soft flesh and become dark brown when fully ripe.

Compared with some smaller or drier varieties, Medjool appears particularly distinctive because of its size and soft flesh.

Are Medjool dates dried?

Not necessarily.

This is a common misconception. Dates naturally lose some of their water during ripening. The fully ripe tamr stage has a significantly lower water content than the unripe fruit.

Medjool is classified as a soft date variety. This therefore does not mean that every Medjool sold has necessarily been industrially dried in the same way as, for example, raisins.

What do dates contain?

Dates are primarily a food rich in carbohydrates and naturally occurring sugars.

Their nutritional composition varies according to the variety, stage of ripeness, and water content. USDA database data for Medjool dates also list fiber and minerals, such as potassium.

However, it is important not to confuse a description of composition with a medical claim. Therefore, in this article, we do not attribute to dates the ability to treat or prevent diseases or to have other specific health effects.

Do dates contain added sugar?

The date palm fruit itself contains naturally occurring sugars.

However, this does not mean that every product made from dates can automatically be marketed as “without added sugar.” For a processed product, its ingredients must be checked.

How are Medjool dates eaten?

The simplest way is to eat them directly on their own.

Before eating them, it is important to remember that a standard whole Medjool date contains a pit inside unless the packaging states that the product is pitted.

Dates are also used to make sweets, baked goods, date paste, snacks, and other food products. The FAO lists whole pitted dates, date paste, confectionery products, and baking among common methods of processing them.

Why are Medjool dates usually more expensive?

One reason is their size and the demands of production.

The FAO describes that, in order to obtain large and “jumbo” fruits, growers must regulate the number of fruits on the bunch, often by manual thinning. Medjool is also a soft and more sensitive fruit that requires careful handling during harvesting and packaging.

Therefore, fruit size, quality, and grading method are important factors in its final price.

How can you recognize Medjool?

A typical Medjool is:

  • larger than many common date varieties,
  • brown to dark brown,
  • soft,
  • fleshy,
  • distinctly sweet.

For Medjool, the FAO distinguishes by weight, for example, the sizes medium, large, and jumbo, although the specific classification may vary between countries and suppliers.

Therefore, the term “jumbo” alone does not necessarily mean exactly the same weight for all producers.

Medjool Dates: A Large Fruit with a Long History

Medjool is one of the best-known date varieties in the world. Its roots are associated with Morocco’s Tafilalet region, and its Arabic name Majhoul – مجهول means “unknown.”

It stands out primarily for its large fruit, soft flesh, and sweet taste. Like other dates, it contains naturally occurring sugars, and therefore, when describing the product, it is important to distinguish between the actual composition of the food and health or nutrition claims regulated by European law.

For a customer who wants to try dates for the first time, Medjool is one of the most interesting varieties they may encounter.
